Project Overview

Designed and developed a personal website to serve as a portfolio, project showcase, and experimentation platform for web development, UI/UX design, and systems documentation. The site is actively maintained and expanded to support new features and content. This idea had came to me from finishing up my web development classes at Bemidji State University where I learned HTML, JavaScript, CSS and later PHP and built a Model, View, Controller framework from scratch.

Outcome

The ongoing development of my personal website provides a platform for continuous learning, skill development, and experimentation with new technologies. The site serves as a centralized place to showcase my work, document projects, and support professional growth through real-world application.

Project Phases & Timeline

Concept and Foundation Completed
Aug 2023 → Dec 2023

Goal

Establish a personal web presence to showcase coursework and early development projects while learning the fundamentals of web design, layout, and site structure.

What I Did

Conceptualized and built an initial personal website as part of web development coursework, focusing on basic layout, content organization, and presenting early projects. Experimented with different page structures and styles to understand how design choices impact usability and presentation.

Technical Details

Implemented a simple static site structure using core web technologies, focusing on HTML structure, basic CSS styling, and early design patterns. Emphasis was placed on understanding page flow, navigation, and content hierarchy rather than advanced functionality.

Challenges

Balancing coursework requirements with personal experimentation, and translating design ideas into functional layouts while still learning core web development concepts.

Outcome

Established the initial foundation of a personal website and developed a clearer understanding of web structure, layout principles, and the role a personal site could play in showcasing work beyond the classroom.

Initial Build and Launch Completed
Jul 2024 → Aug 2024

Goal

Build and deploy the first self-managed version of the personal website, establishing a functional structure, consistent layout, and an initial set of content outside of academic requirements.

What I Did

Built and deployed an early version of the website with a defined page structure, custom styling, and self-managed cloud hosting. Organized content to present personal projects and background information, and iterated on layout and navigation based on early usage and feedback.

Technical Details

Implemented a basic site architecture using core web technologies, introduced reusable layout patterns, and deployed the site to a live hosting environment. Focused on establishing a maintainable structure that could support future changes and expansion.

Challenges

Translating design ideas into a cohesive, maintainable site while balancing new technical concepts, hosting considerations, and evolving content requirements.

Outcome

Successfully launched the first independent version of the website, providing a stable foundation for ongoing iteration, feature development, and long-term ownership beyond its original academic purpose.

Iteration and Expansion Completed
Jan 2025 → Jun 2025

Goal

Continuously improve the website through iterative design changes, feature additions, and structural refactors as technical skills, requirements, and use cases evolved.

What I Did

Iteratively redesigned layouts, refined navigation, and expanded site functionality over time. Added new pages and features, restructured content to better represent projects and experience, and refactored existing components to improve maintainability and usability as skills progressed.

Technical Details

Introduced more structured frontend and backend patterns, improved separation of concerns, and refined reusable components. Adjusted site architecture to better support content growth, project documentation, and future feature expansion while maintaining performance and clarity.

Challenges

Avoiding unnecessary rewrites while iterating on an actively used site, balancing new ideas with maintaining stability, and determining when incremental improvements were more appropriate than larger structural changes.

Outcome

Transformed the website from a basic personal site into a flexible, evolving platform capable of supporting ongoing development, experimentation, and clearer representation of skills and projects.

Platform and Tooling In Progress
— → Present

Goal

Evolve the website into a functional platform that supports project planning, documentation, and ongoing experimentation, aligning with expanding technical and organizational responsibilities.

What I Did

Expanded the website beyond a static portfolio by designing and building internal tooling to support project tracking, phase breakdowns, and detailed documentation. Adapted the platform as responsibilities increasingly involved planning, coordination, and system-level thinking, using the site as a practical environment to model and refine workflows.

Technical Details

Designed and implemented custom backend features to manage projects, phases, tags, and outcomes, alongside administrative interfaces for ongoing content management. Refined data structures and UI components to support structured documentation, filtering, and long-term maintainability.

Challenges

Balancing continued feature development with maintaining a clean and usable interface, and determining which tooling improvements provided real value versus unnecessary complexity.

Outcome

Created an evolving platform that supports both public presentation and internal organization, enabling clearer documentation of work, more intentional project tracking, and continued growth as technical and planning needs change.
